Situated in the plains of the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal, Lumbini is world famous as the birthplace of the Lord Buddha but the people living in many villages around this sacred place have no awareness about the life and teachings of the great teacher who was born and raised in this area.
Metta School was started by Ven. Metteyya and his Dhamma friends with the aim to bring the benefits of education to the poor and underprivileged children of many villages surrounding Lumbini. Such benefits are not at present available to the most children, and hence families, in the area.
And as we have greatly benefited from the various teachings and meditation practices of the Buddha, we have become aware that the Lumbini area has lost its ancient heritage, the Buddhist lineage of psychological principles, practices and social guidelines that originated here in Lumbini with the birth of the Buddha.
It is thus our intention to use Metta School as a vehicle to educate the farm children of the villages surrounding Lumbini, which constitutes approximately 90% of the children in the Lumbini area, with pedagogical methodologies appropriate to this global period, this including the teaching of the history, principles and practices of Buddhism.
Metta School is following the a curriculum developed by All Nepal Bhikkhu Association of Nepal for teaching about Buddha’s life and his teachings. The teachers and volunteers are practitioners of Vipassana Meditation and the technique of awareness of breathing meditation “Anapanasati” is also regularly taught to the students in affiliation with Dhamma Janani Vipassana Meditation Centre in Lumbini.
Metta School welcomes Dhamma volunteers who are interested in teaching and helping in other activities at the school and to help us to share the gift of Education and Dhamma with the Children’s of Lumbini.
